Transport services London
London is probably the hardest operating environment for transport services in the UK. That is not an exaggeration. The combination of the Ultra Low Emission Zone, the Congestion Charge, borough-by-borough weight restrictions, TfL permit requirements for abnormal loads, and an ongoing construction programme across most of central London means every single movement needs planning. A vehicle that is fine in Bedford or Northampton might not be compliant in the ULEZ. A route that looks clear on a map might cross three different loading restriction zones. It is complicated, and operators who do not work in London regularly tend to get caught out.
We have been running transport services in London long enough to know what the common mistakes are. The ULEZ expanded to cover all London boroughs in August 2023. That matters if you are bringing in older diesel plant or support vehicles. The Congestion Charge is currently £15 per day for most commercial vehicles inside the inner zone. Neither of these is difficult to plan around if you know in advance, but both create problems if they are treated as an afterthought.
TfL requires a minimum of two clear working days notice for abnormal load movements on the Transport for London Road Network. For some routes that extends to longer, especially where police escort is required. Borough roads have their own requirements and some boroughs are stricter than others. Our operations team handles all of this as standard. We have the permit relationships and the route knowledge built up from years of moving plant and machinery into and around the capital.
The construction landscape in London is as busy as it has ever been. HS2 work around Euston continues to reshape the access routes into that part of central London. Major residential tower programmes in Nine Elms, Stratford, and Barking are generating sustained demand for crane and plant transport. And the Elizabeth line station construction, while mostly complete above ground, has left permanent changes to the access arrangements at several key locations.
Haulage in London
London haulage is not just about having the right vehicle. It is about knowing which roads allow it, at what time, with what load, and whether the site you are delivering to actually has a window for you to arrive. Plenty of central London sites specify delivery hours that are nowhere on the order paperwork. You find out when you get there. Or you find out in advance, which is what we do.
We work regularly across inner London, the City, and the major outer boroughs. Victorian terrace streets with basement construction underway, live commercial sites in tight footprints, deliveries to sites where access is restricted to a 90-minute window each morning. These are normal conditions for us. Our drivers do not treat them as exceptions.
Weight restrictions on London’s bridges are also worth mentioning. Several Thames crossings carry limits that are lower than you might expect for a major river crossing. For anything above standard gross weight, the crossing options narrow quickly. We factor this in from the planning stage, not on the day.
Heavy haulage in London
Abnormal load movements in London require more coordination than almost anywhere else. TfL’s Network Management team needs to be notified and in many cases the relevant London boroughs do too. Police escort is mandatory on certain routes and for certain load dimensions. Some sections of the TfL road network have time-banded restrictions on abnormal loads, typically avoiding peak hours in both directions.
The Thames crossing situation for wide loads is genuinely limiting. East of Twickenham there are only a handful of crossings that can accommodate abnormal loads, and availability on some of them is restricted. For loads coming in from the west or south west this is usually manageable, but for cross-river movements between north and south London, the planning can become complex quickly.
We manage the full notification and coordination process for heavy haulage in London, from the initial route survey through to TfL submission, police liaison, and escort provision where required. That covers both the strategic road network and borough roads. If you need a heavy haulage movement in London, we can tell you what it will take and give you a realistic timeline for it.
