Transport services Cambridge
Cambridge is one of the more unusual operating environments in the UK. The city centre is medieval. The roads were not designed for vehicles at all, let alone HGVs. And the academic buildings, river bridges, and college gates that make Cambridge what it is also make it genuinely difficult to move large vehicles through without proper planning.
The historic core is not the only challenge. Move out into the Cambridgeshire Fenlands and the landscape looks simple, flat roads, good sightlines, and long straight runs. But the rural bridge network is full of weight restrictions. The drainage infrastructure includes dozens of low-capacity crossings that are simply off limits for heavy loads without specific survey and approval. And the notorious low railway bridge on the A10 near Ely, which has a clearance of around 3.4 metres, has claimed vehicles from operators across the country who did not check their route properly. It is one of the most struck bridges in the UK.
The A14 improvement scheme completed in 2020 at a cost of around 1.5 billion pounds and significantly improved access to Cambridge from the west and north. That has helped, particularly for deliveries to the science and biotech corridor north of the city. But it did not change anything inside the city centre, where the same access constraints have existed for centuries and are not going anywhere.
Cambridge is growing fast. AstraZeneca moved its global headquarters to the Granta Park campus in 2016. The Cambridge Science Park now hosts over 100 companies. The biotech and research cluster north of the city is one of the most active development zones in the UK. All of that generates demand for construction transport, plant logistics, and specialist haulage that requires operators who actually understand what working in Cambridge involves.
Haulage in Cambridge
Most of our Cambridge haulage comes in from the A14 or M11, which is fine until the last mile. Getting into a college for a maintenance delivery, accessing a science park building with a restricted loading bay, or delivering to a city centre construction site with a two-hour access window each morning, each of those requires different planning and different vehicle selection.
Cambridge has the highest cycling modal share of any UK city, around 29 percent of journeys. That matters in practice. More cyclists means narrower effective road widths, more pedestrian crossings being used by people on bikes, and a greater need to be careful about the time of day you are moving a large vehicle through the city. Deliveries that look quick on paper can take much longer when the cycling and pedestrian traffic is at its peak.
For science park and research campus deliveries, the constraints are usually about access geometry rather than the route itself. Loading bays built for standard vans, height bars on car park approaches, and security access requirements all add time. We factor these in before the vehicle leaves.
Heavy haulage in Cambridge
Abnormal load movements into Cambridgeshire need careful route planning before anything else. The Fenland bridge network is the first thing to sort. We work through the latest Cambridgeshire Highways data for any movement that goes off the main A-road network, confirming bridge ratings and clearances before submitting STGO notifications.
For movements into Cambridge city itself, the crossing options over the Cam are limited and several are too narrow or too low for wide loads. The approach routes from the south via the A10 and A1309 are generally the most practical for abnormal loads entering the city, but they still require advance planning with Cambridgeshire County Council.
We also work within the abnormal load notification windows set by the council, which are designed to minimise disruption to the city’s road and cycle network. For clients with tight programme dates, building that lead time in early is important. We can tell you what is required before you commit to a delivery date.
