Crane Hire for Short-Term vs Long-Term Projects

Posted in News MediaLeave a Comment on Crane Hire for Short-Term vs Long-Term Projects

Crane hire can be used for many different projects, some short term, some much longer. While it may seem like a straightforward service, the planning, crane type, and logistics can vary significantly depending on the project length and requirements. In this blog, we are here to help you understand how to plan for the two kinds of projects, what is classed under which one and why a team like ours at NMT Crane Hire can benefit you and your goals.

What Is Considered Short/Long Term?

It typically depends on how long the crane is needed on site and the complexity of the planning and set-up. Every project is different and therefore, some categorisations can be easier than others, but here is a rough guide:

Short-term crane hire

Short-term projects typically last between a single day and a few weeks, depending on the size or difficulty of the lift. These jobs are usually task-specific, where the crane is brought in to complete a defined piece of work and then removed once the job is finished.

Common examples include:

  • Lifting roof materials or steel beams into place
  • Installing HVAC units or large equipment
  • Moving machinery on or off site
  • One-off construction or maintenance tasks
  • Emergency or reactive lifts
  • Film & TV production support, such as lifting lighting rigs, camera equipment, or set materials

Long-term crane hire

Long-term projects typically last from several weeks to a number of months, and in some cases for the full duration of a construction phase. In these situations, the crane becomes part of the ongoing site setup and is used at different stages as the project progresses.

Common examples include:

  • New build construction projects
  • Large-scale refurbishments
  • Infrastructure and civil engineering work
  • Ongoing steel frame installation
  • Multi-phase commercial developments

How Planning Differs in Crane Hire

Planning is vital in any project and understanding the needs of our clients and the exact goals in mind can change up plans significantly so it needs to be right for smooth execution. Anytime we are needed for crane hire, we take into consideration the following factors:

Project Timeline

For short-term crane hire, the timeline is usually tight and focused around a specific day or task, so planning centres on making sure everything is ready for that set window. Access, lift timing, and coordination all need to be precise to avoid delays. For long-term projects, the timeline is more fluid and spread across several weeks or months, meaning the crane may be required at different stages. This calls for ongoing scheduling, flexibility, and close coordination with the wider site team as the build progresses.

Type of Lift and Load Requirements

On short-term projects, the lift is often clearly defined, such as installing equipment or moving materials into place, so the crane can be selected based on that single requirement. For long-term hire, the lifting needs may change over time as the project develops, so it’s important to choose equipment that can support a range of tasks across different phases.

Site Access and Space

Short-term lifts often take place in more restricted environments where quick setup and removal are essential, especially if the crane is only on site for a limited period. Long-term projects usually involve more permanent site setups, but space still needs to be carefully managed as other trades, materials, and structures begin to take shape around the crane.

Safety and Risk Planning

Safety is a priority for both short- and long-term crane hire. For short-term work, this involves making sure all lift plans, access points, and site conditions are assessed ahead of the scheduled lift. For long-term projects, safety planning becomes an ongoing process, with regular checks and coordination to ensure the crane continues to operate safely as the site changes over time.

Budget and Efficiency

With short-term hire, the focus is often on completing the task as efficiently as possible within a defined timeframe. For long-term projects, planning helps ensure the crane is used effectively throughout the build, supporting productivity across multiple stages and helping to keep the project running to schedule.

Types of Cranes for Different Projects

Mobile Cranes

Mobile cranes are one of the most common choices for short-term projects. They can be brought to site quickly, set up efficiently, and used for specific lifts such as installing equipment, lifting materials onto rooftops, or moving machinery. Their flexibility makes them ideal for jobs that need to be completed within a short timeframe.

Tower Cranes

Tower cranes are more often associated with long-term construction projects, particularly on large builds where materials need to be lifted regularly over several weeks or months. They are typically installed on site for the duration of a phase and support ongoing work as the structure develops.

All-Terrain Cranes

All-terrain cranes are useful for projects that involve more complex site conditions. They can be suitable for both short- and long-term hire depending on the job, especially where access is difficult or the terrain is uneven.

Compact Cranes

Compact cranes are often used for projects with limited space, such as city centre sites or indoor lifts. These are commonly seen on short-term jobs where access is tight and precision is needed.

Why the Right Crane Hire Support Matters

No two projects are the same, whether the requirement is for a single lift or ongoing support across several months. Having the right crane hire team in place helps ensure the correct equipment is selected, timelines are met, and every lift is carried out safely and efficiently.

Experienced support can make a significant difference from the early planning stages through to execution. By understanding site conditions, access requirements, and the overall goals of the project, the right team can help prevent delays, reduce risk, and ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. This is just as important for short-term jobs that need precise coordination as it is for long-term projects that rely on consistent support over time.

How Are Construction Cranes Erected

Posted in News MediaLeave a Comment on How Are Construction Cranes Erected

Construction cranes are some of the tallest machines on any job site, often rising hundreds of feet into the air. Many people assume they arrive fully built, but that’s not the case. In reality, cranes are assembled piece by piece through a carefully planned process designed for strength, balance, and safety. If you are interested in how construction cranes are erected, then we are here to explain the process clearly.

Aside from the set ups, if you are thinking of hiring a crane company for your needs or actually getting into a team like ours, get in touch today and we will help you the best we can!

What Type of Construction Cranes Are We Talking Of?

When people think about cranes towering over city skylines, they are usually looking at tower cranes. Tower cranes are a powerful kind and have a lot to offer. Their set ups can be a long process taking roughly 2-5 days and are of course done in sections. Further inspections may be needed after erection. The kinds of work you can expect these cranes to be erected for are:

  • Apartment towers
  • Office skyscrapers
  • Hotels and mixed-use developments
  • Hospitals
  • Universities
  • Airports
  • Convention centers

Why are tower cranes used?

There are many reasons tower cranes are used for construction work. Tower cranes are used on large construction projects because they can lift heavy materials to great heights while taking up very little space. They are commonly used on high-rise and commercial builds where a fixed crane can remain on site for long periods. Their ability to grow taller as construction progresses makes them efficient, stable, and well suited for dense urban environments.

So, How Are Construction Cranes Erected?

Step 1: Preparing the foundation
The process begins with constructing a reinforced concrete foundation. This base is engineered to support the crane’s weight and the loads it will lift. Once poured, the concrete must cure and pass inspection before assembly begins.

Step 2: Assembling the mast
Next, a mobile crane lifts and stacks the vertical mast sections. Each section is bolted securely into place, creating the tall central tower that gives the crane its height.

Step 3: Installing the slewing unit and jib
The rotating unit is installed on top of the mast, followed by the horizontal jib and counter-jib. Counterweights are added to balance the crane and allow it to lift heavy materials safely.

Step 4: Testing and certification
Before the crane is put into service, it undergoes thorough inspections and load testing. This ensures the crane meets safety standards and operates correctly.

Step 5: Climbing the crane as the building rises
As construction progresses, the crane can be raised higher using a self-climbing system. New mast sections are added beneath the crane, allowing it to grow along with the building.

How To Ensure The Process Is Safe?

Crane erection is carefully planned and carried out by trained professionals following strict safety procedures. Before work begins, our engineers create detailed erection plans that account for load limits, ground conditions, and weather.

During assembly, ourselves at NMT Crane Hire, install each crane section in a controlled sequence, with every connection checked for alignment and strength. Wind conditions are closely monitored, and work is paused if conditions become unsafe.

Once the crane is erected, it undergoes inspections and testing before being approved for use. These steps ensure the crane can operate safely throughout the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all construction cranes follow the same erection process?
No. This process applies to tower cranes. Other cranes, such as mobile cranes, arrive mostly assembled and require less setup.

How are tower cranes dismantled?
Tower cranes are dismantled in reverse order, often using a mobile crane or by lowering sections using the crane’s own systems.

Is crane erection dangerous?
Crane erection is a controlled process carried out by trained professionals using strict safety procedures and inspections.

NMT has successfully completed a precision tower crane dismantle up North this week, showcasing our technical expertise and planning that defines our approach to complex lifting operations.

Using our 300-tonne Liebherr L1300-6.2 mobile crane configured with a 38.5-metre luffer, the team safely removed the tower crane in a tightly controlled environment. The operation required overcoming multiple challenges including restricted site access, significant height considerations, and the unpredictable winter weather conditions typical of the northern region.

“This is exactly the type of operation where experience and preparation make all the difference,” said JD Ambridge, Joint Managing Director of NMT.

“Tower crane dismantles are never straightforward, but when you add restricted access and challenging weather into the equation, every detail of your lift plan becomes critical. Our team executed this flawlessly through meticulous planning, detailed rigging preparation, and clear communication at every stage.”

The operation remained smooth and fully compliant from start to finish, with safety protocols maintained throughout despite the demanding site conditions.

This successful dismantle is another demonstration of our capability, reliability, and experience that customers across the UK rely to deliver for complex dismantles and major lifting operations.

Here’s a reminder of just some of what we do:

  • Complex tower crane dismantles in restricted and challenging environments
  • Heavy lift operations using our fleet of mobile cranes including the Liebherr L1300-6.2
  • Precise lift planning with detailed engineering and risk assessment
  • Nationwide coverage with local expertise and knowledge
  • All-weather operations with contingency planning for adverse conditions

Whether it’s a tower crane dismantle in confined urban spaces, a heavy lift on a remote site, or a time-critical operation requiring precision planning, NMT brings the same level of technical expertise and operational excellence to every project.

From the initial site survey through to final handover, we ensure that every lift is engineered for safety, efficiency, and complete compliance with all relevant regulations.

Crane Licence Requirements In The UK

If a crane licence is on your list, we’ve got the key information you need. At NMT Crane Hire, we break down the UK crane licence requirements so you know exactly what to expect. Just like getting your car or lorry licence, there are mandatory steps to complete before you qualify.

Who Needs A Crane Licence?

Anyone who wants to operate a crane professionally in the UK must hold the correct licence. This applies whether you’re working on construction sites, infrastructure projects, or industrial operations. Employers are legally required to make sure their crane operators are properly qualified, so you can’t just step into our cranes without proof of training.

Do Other Licences Count?

Even if you already hold a driving licence for cars or lorries, a separate crane licence is still needed. The type of licence you’ll need depends on the crane you want to operate, with different categories covering mobile cranes, tower cranes, and other specialist equipment.

How To Get A Crane Licence In The UK

  1. Check your eligibility
You’ll need to be at least 18 years old and physically fit to handle the demands of crane operation. Some employers may ask for a standard driving licence too, depending on the crane type.

  2. Choose the right crane category
Different licences apply to different cranes – for example, mobile cranes, tower cranes, or crawler cranes. Make sure you apply for the category relevant to the equipment you’ll operate.

  3. Complete recognised training
Training must be done through an accredited body, such as the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) or NPORS. These courses cover both theory and hands-on practice.

  4. Pass the theory and practical tests
You’ll sit a written or computer-based test to prove your knowledge, followed by a practical assessment where you demonstrate safe crane operation.

  5. Obtain your certification card
Once you pass, you’ll receive your CPCS Red Card (or equivalent), which proves you’re qualified. With further experience and assessment, you can upgrade to a Blue Competence Card for long-term recognition.

  6. Keep your licence valid
Licences usually need renewal every few years. You may have to show evidence of ongoing work and take refresher training or re-tests.

Why Should You Get A Crane License?

There are plenty of benefits to gaining your crane licence, no matter the steps it takes to achieve it. Earning any certification is rewarding, but a crane licence is one you can put to real, practical use throughout your career.

With the expert team at NMT by your side, you’ll have the guidance and support you need to succeed in the field. A crane licence doesn’t just qualify you, it opens the door to a work environment where you can grow and progress.

What Else?

The crane industry relies on highly trained operators who can deliver precision on every job. With standards set high from the very start of your career, gaining your crane licence early gives you a strong advantage. It positions you for more qualified roles as you progress and can have a lasting impact on your future opportunities. Certified operators are less likely to be replaced, as regulations require qualified personnel for lifting operations.

Overall, you will be trained to a professional and certified standard making your license much more than just a card.

NMT supports major rooftop installation

Posted in News MediaLeave a Comment on NMT supports major rooftop installation

Last week NMT Crane Hire was proud to assist in a key milestone for the ongoing redevelopment at 100 New Bridge Street in London, delivering a critical lift that saw the successful rooftop installation of two Air Source Heat Pumps and a Packaged Plant Room.

With soaring temperatures and limited working space in the capital, the lift presented several logistical challenges. But thanks to meticulous pre-lift planning, skilled operators, and close coordination with site teams, the operation was completed safely, on time, and without disruption.

JD Ambridge, Joint Managing Director of NMT Crane Hire, said: “Urban lifting always demands precision, but in extreme heat and tight access conditions, the stakes are even higher. We’re incredibly proud of our team’s performance on this one — their expertise, attitude, and professionalism under pressure are exactly what sets NMT apart. It’s always rewarding to support clients on key project milestones like this.”

This lift is another example of how NMT continues to provide dependable crane hire solutions to complex construction and M&E projects across the capital and beyond.

Whether it’s plant room installation, HVAC delivery, or high-rise construction support, NMT Crane Hire is committed to safety, service, and successful outcomes. Get in touch with our Hire Desk to arrange your next lift.

NMT Crane Hire, one of the UK’s leading crane hire specialists, has strengthened its heavy-lifting capabilities with the acquisition of a second Liebherr LTM 1300-6.2 mobile crane, this time equipped with a 70-metre luffing jib.

The latest addition to the Bedford-based company’s fleet represents a £2.3 million investment and positions it among the select few UK crane hire companies operating three 300-tonne capacity cranes.

The strategic acquisition follows the successful integration of NMT’s Liebherr LTM 1300-6.2 six months ago, which has performed in line with expectations and generated significant client demand for similar heavy-lift capabilities.

JD Ambridge, Joint Managing Director at NMT, said the investment aligns with robust order books and emerging market opportunities – including the film and television industry – requiring specialised heavy-lift solutions.

“Fleet expansion has been central to our 2025 strategy,” Ambridge said.

“Our analysis of current contracts and pipeline opportunities made this decision straightforward. The first LTM 1300-6.2 has performed to expectations, our original one is still busy and now adding the luffing jib capability to a new crane addresses specific client requirements we’ve identified.”

The 70-metre luffing jib system (at 2.7 Tonnes, maximum reach) enables the crane to operate effectively in confined spaces while maintaining exceptional reach and precision capabilities that are essential for complex urban construction projects and industrial installations.

In short, this is a versatile crane that can ‘go and lift anywhere’.

Gerry White, Sales and Operations Director, emphasised the timing significance as NMT enters its peak summer operational period.

“Adding this second 300-tonne Liebherr fundamentally strengthens our service proposition,” White said.

“The crane’s ability to access tight spaces combined with its reach, radius, and now luffing capability creates unique solutions for our clients. We’re already fielding enquiries specifically for this configuration.”

NMT has completed comprehensive operator training programmes with Liebherr’s technical team, with plans to certify all operations and rigging personnel on the LTM 1300-6.2 platform.
